Boulder Junior Bison

What player scored the first ever Jr. bison goal in 2009?

NCAA Showcase team report

2011 Western States Shootout Wrap-Up
Published on 12/24/2011 9:50:00 AM

For the third consecutive season, I was lucky enough to head to Las Vegas, Nevada and broadcast nearly 20 games for the Western States Hockey League on Fasthockey.com. WSHL Commissioner Ron White and his staff did a great job of once again putting on a first-class event, where over 60 NCAA and ACHA college hockey scouts made the trip to Sin City for a chance to recruit some of the top talent the WSHL has to offer.

Over the course of the five days of fantastic hockey, I was able to see every team play at least once, including the two teams participating from the Northern Pacific Hockey League, the Seattle Totems and Southern Oregon Spartans. Below is my assessment of each team; I have included the teams in their current order of standing, with both their overall and showcase record included, along with a quick summary of each teams’ showcase, key players I noticed and a standings projection.

All thoughts below are of my own personal opinion and in no way are the sentiments of the Western States Hockey League or the Valencia Flyers Hockey Club.

WESTERN DIVISION

1. Fresno Monsters (28-2-1, 4-0-0)

The Fresno Monsters are currently running away with not only the Western Division but also the regular season title for the entire league. This is a team that rolls four lines on offense and their three defensive pairings could be the #1 for just about any other team in the league. Oh and by the way, they also have the top two goaltenders in the entire league in returner Marcus Harbison and rookie Tom McGuckin. So essentially, it’s nothing new going on up north, where Head Coach Bryce Dale looks poised to lead his squad to a Thorne Cup Championship this season, after a bit of a letdown in the playoffs last year. Fresno started off the showcase with two close wins, beating both the Dallas Ice Jets and Southern Oregon Spartans by a score of 3-2. They then lambasted who many believe to be the top team in the NORPAC, the Seattle Totems, 6-1 in front of a large crowd, before another impressive victory, 6-2 over the El Paso Rhinos, who are the only team this season to take a series from the league-leading Monsters.

Key Players: I could talk about just about anybody on the roster here, including the obvious ones; leading scorer Nick McKee, set-up man Marc Haaf and Captain David Kann but I’m going to touch on a few “under-the-radar” type guys. Defenseman Vinny Ciaglo was fantastic in the four Fresno wins. The Las Vegas native is cool under pressure and has really come into his own in his third season with the team. The entire line of Rob Kolander, Josiah Nikkel and Don Coyle causes massive matchup problems for opposing defenses. Each guy has size, each can skate and they all know how to put the puck in the net. They know one-another well and are the best cycling line in the entire league.

Standings Prediction: Not much of a prediction here, this team will finish the regular season first place in the west, running way.

2. San Diego Gulls (18-8-2, 2-2-0)

With first-year Head Coach Craig Carlyle at the controls, the San Diego Gulls look and play like a completely different team. Long time Head Coach and General Manager Bruce Miller always had his team ready to go but they continually fell flat in big games. That is not the case this season, as Carlyle has his boys playing his system and it has worked wonders. The Gulls kicked-off their showcase with a tough 4-1 loss to the Seattle Totems but they rebounded nicely, with two big wins, 5-4 over the Dallas Ice Jets in a shootout and 3-2 over the Texas Brahmas, before concluding with a 4-2 loss (after an empty net goal) to the always-tough Idaho Jr. Steelheads.

Key Players: Russian forward Arseny Stoyakin currently leads the team with 38 points in 28 games. He centers a line that includes Michael Pantano (out with a shoulder injury during the showcase) and Tomas Busek, a native of the Czech Republic. These three combine to form a line that has it all; size, speed, smarts and skill and are as tough to stop as any trio in the league. Goaltender Brian Walters, a native of Vermont, has come in and solidified the goal crease for San Diego, a problem that has plagued the Gulls for the last few seasons.

Standings Prediction: Fresno may be too far-gone but the Gulls are nestled comfortably into second place in the West and will hold down the spot, good for a home series in the first round of the playoffs.

3. Valencia Flyers (12-12-5, 3-0-1)

The Valencia Flyers are as tough to read as any team in the league. Some days they look like one of the leagues’ elite and at other times, they struggle to win games against lesser opponents. First-year Head Coach Jocelyn Langlois has done a terrific job in Valencia of changing the culture and getting his boys to play within his system, much like Carlyle has done in San Diego. The Flyers started the showcase with a 4-1 victory over the Cheyenne Stampede before losing in a shootout to the New Mexico Renegades, a game in which they led 2-0 not even three minutes into the contest. Valencia could easily be nipping at the Gulls’ heels, if not for a 0-4 record in shootouts this season. The Flyers bounced back however and finished with a 6-2 win over the Dallas Snipers and a huge 5-2 victory over Southern Oregon.

Key Players: Third-year forward Eddie Keshishian currently leads the entire league in scoring, with 52 points in 28 games. He has fit nicely in to Langlois’ system and is a threat to score every time he touches the ice. Swedish forward Sam Khongmuk and rookie Austin Ehrlich play on the top line with Keshishian and each are enjoying huge seasons in their first year of junior hockey. Khongmuk is currently second on the team with 34 points and Ehrlich is third with 29.

Standings Prediction: The Flyers’ play will steady in the second half but not enough to surpass San Diego. Valencia will head south for a matchup with the Gulls to begin the playoffs, two teams that always play each other tough.

4. Arizona Redhawks (12-9-4, 2-0-2)

There has been a changing of the guard in the desert, as for the first time in a long time, the Phoenix Polar Bears (now Phoenix Knights) have been supplanted as the top dog in the greater-Phoenix area, as the Redhawks have risen to prominence under Head Coach Rob Powell. They still have a long way to go and if they don’t move up in the standings, a playoff sweep at the hands of the Monsters may be in their future but make no mistake, the Redhawks are the team to beat in Arizona. They did not lose a single game in regulation during the showcase, losing in extra time to both the Texas Brahmas and Boulder Bison and bettering the Ogden Mustangs and Cheyenne Stampede, for their best performance in Vegas to date.

Key Players: Captain Theo Campe leads the team with 36 points in 25 games and has a knack for scoring clutch goals. Andrew Barletta, who got lost in the goaltending shuffle with the Polar Bears last season, hooked on with the Redhawks and has been sensational since coming over, sporting a record of 5-2-2 with a sparkling 1.70 goals-against average. Defenseman Cam Maceau has recently returned to the team, strengthening a suspect back-end.

Standings Prediction: Arizona has blossomed into a very good hockey club and they could easily get hot and catch Valencia for third place but I don’t think they have enough firepower to do so. The Redhawks will make the playoffs however for the first time in franchise history and visit Fresno in round one.

5. Phoenix Knights (10-23-1, 1-3-0)

The New York Yankees of the WSHL are no longer, as the Phoenix Polar Bears called it quits after seven Thorne Cup Championships after the 2010-2011 season. The franchise was subsuquently renamed the Knights and put under new ownership. Head Coach Tom Helton and crew have done a great job with what they have, but what they have is 11 healthy skaters, after injuries decimated nearly their entire roster. The Knights put up a fight in every one of their games but with only two lines able to skate, they flared out late in games. Their only win came in an exciting 6-5 overtime victory over the New Mexico Renegades but they went on to lose 9-7 to the Dallas Snipers, 5-2 to Boulder and 7-2 to Ogden.

Key Players: Leading scorer Jarrod Levos has as lethal of a scoring touch as anyone in the league, he just needs healthy bodies to play with. Forward Chace Jackson is a big body that can find the net and if he can figure out the defensive zone he’ll be a real threat in this league. Two-way forward Jon Eades has picked up his offensive game as the year has gone along. He currently has 22 points, while playing in every situation for the Knights.

Standings Prediction: The Knights just aren’t healthy enough to make a run and have already played 34 games, the most of any team in the league. They will miss the playoffs for the first time EVER.

6. Long Beach Bombers (9-15-1, 1-3-0)

The Long Beach Bombers are always right in the thick of things in the Western Division race and if first-year Head Coach Chris White can keep implementing his strategies, this season will be no exception. The Bombers have seen some ups and downs but have picked up a handful of players, including the Linehan brothers, who finished 1-2 in scoring for them last season. The Bomb-squad started off the showcase with an impressive 4-1 win over the up-start New Mexico Renegades but took a step back in losses to Ogden, the Dallas Ice Jets and Cheyenne, a game in which they led 3-0 before giving up five unanswered goals.

Key Players: Timmy and Johnny Linehan are back for their third season with the team and once they knock a little bit of rust off of their skates, they will be all over the score sheet once again. Defenseman Brian White, another recent addition, has been one of their best players since being acquired; he is a rare physical defenseman who can also skate.

Standings Prediction: Long Beach has the talent to move up into fifth place but I don’t think they have enough to climb into a playoff spot.

MOUNTAIN

1. Idaho Jr. Steelheads (25-2-2, 4-0-0)

Head Coach and General Manager John Olver is at it again and doing what he has done for years; win hockey games wherever he goes. The Jr. Steelheads are firmly atop the standings in the new Mountain Division and benefit from only having to play the Fresno Monsters three times, a road trip in which they went 1-2-0. Since that series, played October 28-30 in Fresno, the Jr. Steelheads have only gotten stronger, picking up numerous players from the Tier II North American Hockey League. Once again, they flexed their muscles in the showcase, with impressive wins over Southern Oregon, Seattle, El Paso and San Diego. They are the best defensive team in the league and would give Fresno a real run for their money if the two teams played another series this year, which would only come true if both squads win their conferences (a very feasible situation) and meet in the Thorne Cup in El Paso.

Key Players: Captain Justin Videen has been excellent in all situations for Olver and is currently second on the team with 37 points. Defenseman Conner Tedstrom is a big boy who moves well for his size and gained a lot of attention from scouts under Las Vegas’ lights.

Standings Prediction: Idaho will win the Mountain Division and have home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs. Playing their home games in McCall, a two-hour drive from Boise up into the mountains, does not hurt their chances either.

2. Boulder Bison (19-5-2, 4-0-0)

The Boulder Bison were one of the most surprising teams in the showcase, matching the pristine records of both Fresno and Idaho. Head Coach Brent Cullaton has brought NHL veteran Derek Armstrong on board to assist him this season and his team has reaped the benefits. Both coaches are class acts and could probably still lace them up in the pros right now. They have the most disciplined squad in the league, as shown by their lack of “chirpiness” on the ice, as they seldom get into verbal disputes with opposing teams and officials, a sign of a good hockey club. Boulder beat El Paso, Phoenix and Southern Oregon each by three goals before winning in a shootout over Arizona.

Key Players: Leading scorer Chris Guidotti is not very big but he knows where to be at all times and possesses that seemingly un-teachable “slipperiness” about him. Captain Anthony Cullen won’t show up on the score sheet as much but plays a lot like Armstrong, with grit and class, never backing down from anyone. Lastly, defenseman Preston James is a smooth skater who can score, as well as play physical.

Standings Prediction: This is a good hockey club that could easily challenge Idaho for 1st place but having already lost all three contests against the Steelies, it will be tough. Boulder will finish second and be home in the first round of the playoffs.

3. Cheyenne Stampede (13-13-3, 1-1-2)

The Stampede are in their first year of existence after new owners took over the program and moved it from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Jeff Heimel came over from the Phoenix Polar Bears to assume the Head Coaching job and got his club off to a hot start, going 9-2-0 in their first 11 games of the season but have won only four games since. They are a hot-and-cold type squad, looking great in some games and below average in others. In game one they were ousted by Valencia 4-1, before losing two consecutive overtime games to El Paso and Arizona. In their final game of the showcase, they trailed 3-0 to Long Beach early but notched five unanswered goals to get their lone win of the weekend.

Key Players: General Manager Mark Lantz has been very active in the trade market this season and made two moves during the showcase alone, bringing in Phoenix forward Danny Kulikov, who was second on the Knights in scoring, and El Paso forward Carl Graf, who was second on the Rhinos in scoring. Both players were key contributors in the Stampede’s victory over Long Beach.

Standings Prediction: Cheyenne is cemented into third place, as they are a better team than both Ogden and Park City but a lesser team than Idaho and Boulder.

4. Ogden Mustangs (6-19-3, 3-1-0)

To the surprise of many, the Ogden Mustangs had a breakout showcase, winning three of their four games and solidifying their fourth place standing. The franchise is also in their first year in a new city after a move from Bakersfield, California and Head Coach Joe Pfleegor has done a fantastic job since taking over for Devin Firl, just a few weeks ago. The Mustangs beat the Dallas Snipers, Long Beach Bombers and Phoenix Knights, with their only loss coming to Arizona.

Key Players: The Mustangs have two players from the Czech Republic that they will need more out of in the second half of the season. Lukas Moudry was solid in the showcase, picking up three goals and three assists, while fellow countryman Jan Vcislak is a big, strong winger who must learn to use his size more if Ogden hopes to make a run.

Standings Prediction: Ogden is a bit of a wildcard. They have not shown the ability to hang with Idaho and Boulder but can contend with Cheyenne for third place. They will beat out in-state rival Park City and take fourth place, good for a playoff berth in their inaugural season.

5. Park City Moose (4-23-1, 1-3-0)

The Park City Moose are another first-year franchise experiencing their fair share of problems. They have had the most roster turnover in the entire league but continue to play tight, thanks in part to the tutelage of Head Coach and General Manager Aaron Kinslow. Park City lost three of their four games at the showcase, slipping further behind their rival Ogden Mustangs for the final playoff spot in the Mountain Division. They lost to the Dallas Ice Jets, Texas Brahmas and New Mexico Renegades but managed to pick up a win over the Dallas Snipers, possibly providing a little momentum boost into the second-half of the season.

Key Players: Forward Devin Holmes leads the team with 27 points and has done a lot of the work on his own. If forward Skyler Metcalfe can keep his cool, he can also be a force to be reckoned with come January, as Park City tries to string a few games together and sneak into the playoffs.

Standings Prediction: The Moose have shown the ability to compete with Ogden but that’s about it in their division. They play hard every game but don’t have enough skill to sustain against some of the better teams. Under Kinslow, they will only get better however and can make some noise in 2012-2013.

MID-WEST

1. Dallas Ice Jets (20-4-3, 2-1-1)

The Dallas Ice Jets are the polar opposite of the other first-year teams in the league that have struggled, as they are currently atop the tight Mid-West Division, ahead of perennial powers like El Paso and Texas. This is a team coached by a great hockey mind in Paul Taylor, who has done a terrific job of parlaying the talent the Ice Jets Academy has been pumping out of Grapevine, Texas for the last few years into a junior franchise. A large number of his players have suited up in Ice Jets red and blue for years and know how to play Taylor’s style of game. They have benefited from a ton of home games in the first half of the season and did not venture outside of the state of Texas until the first week of December. The road the rest of the way will not be easy, especially with both El Paso and Texas heating up but this may be the only team in the league that can rival the depth of Fresno. In Vegas, the Ice Jets beat-up on Park City 6-1, before losing a close one to the Monsters by a score of 3-2. They then lost in a nine-round shootout to the San Diego Gulls and took care of Long Beach 3-0 in their finale.

Key Players: Captain Richard Bohan may be the most unheralded player on their roster. He is a tall, lanky forward with average foot speed and a decent shot but the kid continually finds ways to put the puck in the back of the net. He has some of the best hands I’ve seen at this level and an uncanny nose for the net. Forward Johnny Henson started off the year hot but has cooled down recently, he’s as slick as they come and can takeover a game when he wants to. New additions Austin Rehwenkel and Christian Elsborg can help put this team over the top with some added offense.

Standings Prediction: I like the Ice Jets and if they can find a way to help their fantastic goaltenders out a bit more, they will take the division. I’m going to say it, the Ice Jets will finish first in the Mid-West by a hair over El Paso.

2. El Paso Rhinos (18-7-0, 1-3-0)

The El Paso Rhinos are coached by Cory Herman, one of the best guys in all of junior hockey. He is as calm as they come and his confidence exudes through his team. The Rhinos have been one of the top teams in the league for years, so their true colors will be shown this season, where they have hit a bit of a rough patch. Coming into the showcase, El Paso was coming off of a series victory over Fresno, making them the first team to do so all season long. They struggled in Sin City however, beating just the Cheyenne Stampede in overtime, with regulation losses to Boulder, Idaho and Fresno. They did not have the easiest schedule but 2-2-0 would have looked much better.

Key Players: The Rhinos always seem to have players like Dallas Szustak. Not the fanciest of guys but the kid can skate, is a physical presence and can find twine with ease. He is a carbon copy of former forward Tyler Ridgedell, who is now playing NCAA Division III hockey. Alex Koopmeiners is a guy they will need a little more from, as the pick-up out of the NAHL has not been as prolific as one would expect.

Standings Prediction: El Paso while on top of their game are the best team in the Mid-West but the Ice Jets have been more consistent thus far. They play each other six times in the second half of the season and it will be close but the Rhinos will finish just a few points back.

3. Texas Brahmas (15-10-1, 2-1-1)

The Texas Brahmas have the skill to be the top team in the Mid-West but will need to put it all together if they want to ascend the standings. Forwards Connor Tamai and Kevin Filthaut are both in the top seven in league scoring but for the Brahmas to be successful, they will need to get more out of their second and third lines. They started off the showcase with a shaky win over Park City, before playing very well in a win over Arizona, a shootout loss to Seattle and a late regulation loss to San Diego.

Key Players: Other than the obvious two (Tamai and Filthaut) the Brahmas will need to get more out of Latvian Albert Bolush. The second-year forward led the team last year with 65 points but is only on pace for 50 this season, not a bad year by any stretch but usually points trend up, not down. Another guy to look for is forward Quade Hamlin who is undersized but can stickhandle with the best of them.

Standings Prediction: Texas is good and if they weren’t in the Mid-West they might be even better but they are not deep enough to overtake the Ice Jets or Rhinos.

4. New Mexico Renegades (12-12-1, 2-1-1)

The New Mexico Renegades are very similar to the Arizona Redhawks. Both teams are in their third year in the league and both are starting to come into their own and make a name for themselves. At the halfway point of the season, the Renegades have their best record at the break to date, as they are currently playing .500 hockey. A lot of that is thanks to new Head Coach and General Manager Michael Gershon, who took over when Peter Ambroziak left for Ottawa. The Renegades play in the shadow of the New Mexico Mustangs but do not get a ton of support from their NAHL brethren. They had their second-consecutive winning showcase, with a great come-from-behind victory over Valencia in a shootout and a strong performance against Park City. They lost in overtime to Phoenix and were beaten 4-1 in an early morning contest against Long Beach.

Key Players: Second-year forward Matt Uvodich was excellent in the showcase for the Renegades. He looks as though he’s gotten a little stronger since last year and is a solid skater who will look to build off of a great showcase. Defensively the Renegades are as strong as ever, as Captain Vince DiTirro has turned into a shutdown guy that is always on the ice against the oppositions top players, while Joe Echelmeir is a smooth skating offensive D-man who quarterbacks the power play.

Standings Prediction: They will make the playoffs for the first time ever and can give El Paso a run for their money, as they have already beaten the Rhinos once this season.

5. Dallas Snipers (3-26-0, 1-3-0)

The Dallas Snipers are the Park City Moose of the Mid-West. A team in their first year of existence, with a great hockey guy at the helm but between roster turnover and a tough schedule, they have not been able to get anything going. They came into the league with the Ice Jets and play just 10 miles away in Euless, so a lot of the top-end talent has gone elsewhere. They have a solid top line but outside of that, they have failed to find secondary scoring. They could have easily gone 2-2-0, which would have been a huge success but lost to the Moose in a battle of the bottom two teams in the league, by a score of 4-3. They got a huge win, 9-7 over a depleted Phoenix lineup, before losing to both Valencia and Ogden.

Key Players: Arnie Osuna and Shane Bonds have combined for 65 points, which is as much as the next six leading scorers combined; it’s simple to see, they are the offense. Defenseman Craig Brubaker was very good in the showcase and showed a little offensive flair, he could be a bargaining chip come trade deadline time.

Standings Prediction: They are almost mathematically eliminated from playoff contention already but if this team can pick up a couple of wins the rest of the way and return some of their top talent for 2012-2013 season, a breakout year could be in store.

Jr. Bison use strength through teammate to find a way

The Boulder Jr. Bison players had a short meeting yesterday to dedicate a win to the family of teammate Rory Futz.  Rory's father Doug a great man and supporter of the team has terminal cancer and the boys wanted to get a win for there teammate Rory so they dedicated the game to the Futz family.  "This team is a family and we all support Rory and his family, they are going through a tough time and need all the support they can get stated head coach Brent Cullaton. We gave Rory the weekend off to spends time with his dad and will be there for him at any cost."

The Jr. Bison came out to a slow start falling behind 3-0 to the Stampede.  But after an emotional intermission the bison rallied on behalf of there missing teammate and led by a Taylor Porrier hattrick and a 4 point night by Preston James found a way to win by a final of 6-4. Also scoring for the bison were Higgs (1), Ensor (1).

The Bison play the stampede again tonight on the road at the Cheyenne Ice and Event Center at 7:35pm.  Please bring a canned food item if you will be attending the game in Cheyenne.

Three Jr. Bison players called up to Tier 2

The Boulder Jr. Bison are pleased to announce the recent promotion of three of its players.  Defencemen Preston James and Nick Hinsberg were both called up to play in one of the top junior leagues in Ontario, the OJHL for the Aurora Tigers.  Both these guys compete hard and play a simple style of hockey that most teams are looking for stated head Coach Brent Cullaton.  They play inside the dots and make a good first pass,  I hope they are successful at that level.

The most recent promotion was goaltender Chris Komma.  He will be heading south to play with Corpus Christi of the NAHL.  Chris is a great goalie that deserves this opportunity.  He knows what he has to do to be successful at that level.  Corpus Christi Head Coach Justin Quenville had watched film on Chris and after speaking with Coach Cullaton and Coach Armstrong he felt that Chris was the right guy he was looking for to fill his teams void.  It will now be up to Chris to earn his spot on the team.

The Jr. Bison are proud of these players and wish them all the best in there hockey endeavours.  The Bison are off until November 11th when they host the Texas Brahmas at BVICE.

Bison sweep through the Lonestar state

The Boulder Junior Bison swept through the lonestar state taking all 6 points in commanding fashion vs the Dallas Snipers this weekend.  Friday night saw the Bison attack early scoring just 42 seconds in to the contest on a goal by Will Neff.  The Bison kept there foot on the gas dominating the game with an 8-1 final.  Bison scorers we Neff (2), Gauthier (3), Guidotti, Yoder, Snedden and goaltender Dax Deadrick picking up his 4th win of the season.

Saturday the Bison players were treated to a special NHL style day as coach Derek Armstrong set the team up to take in the Dallas Stars and Columbus Blue Jackets pre game skates in the morning.  At The game the Bison fell behind early 2-0 by a hard working Sniper team.  But in the second the Snipers ran out of gas and the Bison went into the 3rd leading 5-3 and didnt look back finishing the game with an 8-5 victory on a Chris Guidotti hattrick.

Sunday the Bison finished the sweep lead by an Anthony Cullen natural hattrick and finished the series with an 8-3 victory.

The Bison are off for the next 3 weeks and will begin preparation for a tough Texas Brahma team at home on November 11-13 at Bvice.

Rhinos ground Bison

The El Paso Rhinos came into Boulder and brought the Jr. bison back to earth taking all 6 points over the weekend and leaving the home Bison with only 1 point.

Friday night saw the Bison blow an early 2-0 lead on goals by Chris Guidotti and Taylor Porrier and have to scramble to force overtimeWith the Bison power play unable to penetrate the Rhino defense in OT the game would go to a shootout.  The Rhino's scored on there 2nd shot which would stay that way until the final attempt by Bison rookie Chandler Yoder.  What happened next would leave the Bison players and fans speechless.  Yoder scored what was thought to be the tying goal to force a sudden death shootout on a great move but after the puck went in the net, Yoders momentum bumped the Rhino goaltender knocking him down.  The officials met at center and declared no goal on what Bison staff called a "ficticious rule" made up to cover the mistake.  Yoder was given a 5 minute major and game misconduct and a re shot was issued. The Bison missed the re shot losing the game.  Head Coach Brent Cullaton said " I was not mad that we lost, we had our chances to score in the game but didn't.  I am upset that all the officials would not admit they were wrong and made a mistake! I have made plenty of mistakes during my playing and coaching career, it happens.  but I can admit that and not make up reasons to hide or cover it."  The final ruling was that the goal should have counted and a minor penalty was given the next day after league officials viewed the play.

Saturday night was a back and forth contest with the Bison leading 2-1 after 2nd on goals by Anthony Cullen and Taylor Porrier.  The 3rd would prove to be too much as the Rhino's would make a late charge and with 1 minute remaining the Bison would have a collapse in the dzone allowing the game winning goal.

Sunday the Rhino's beat a lifeless, listless Jr. Bison team.  Emotions ran high and an undisciplined Bison team would give up 4 Rhino power play goals for a 7-4 defeat.  Coach Derek Armstrong said " Their top players out played ours! simple we went over power play before the game and went out and tried to do our own thing and it back fired on us."  This El Paso team works hard and does not deviate from the system in place, that’s why they win.

The Bison will re group this week as they head out on the road to Dallas, TX to play the

Jr. Bison sweep series vs Moose

The Boulder Junior Bison took all 6 points from the Park City Moose this weekend.  Friday night saw the Jr. Bison take down the Moose 5-2, earning goaltender Dax Deadrick his first junior win.  The Bison tied the game at 16:40 of the 1st period on a top shelf effort by Captain Anthony Cullen.  The Moose would add a goal to take the lead but rookie Jake Christofferson would answer back at 8:12 of the 2nd period and rookie Chandler Yoder would get his first junior game winning goal at 13:29 of the second.  The Bison came out in the third and didn't look back getting goals from Ryan Gauthier and league leading scorer Chris Guidotti

Saturday saw the Bison take an early lead on a goal by Jake Bauer at 5:01 of the first period.  But the Moose would show a lot of character with a depleted line up answering just .20 seconds later.  The league leading Bison power play would take its toll on the Moose with pp goals by David Higgs, Will Neff, Chris Guidotti and Patrick Grace.  Veteran forward Taylor Porrier would also score with the Bison coming out with a 6-2 victory.

Sunday saw the Bison fall 2-0 early in the game.  But the Bison power play would answer the bell and play a big role again with goals by Anthony Cullen and David Higgs (2).  Austin Snedden, Josh Rolfe, Seth Ensor, Chris Guidottoi and Justin Brame would all factor into the scoring with the Bison winning and sweeping the by a score of 8-2.

The Bison will begin preparing for a tough battle and Mid Western division final rematch vs the El Paso Rhinos on Friday night at 7:15pm at BVICE with special guests returning to watch and support the team.

Jr. Bison take 3 of 4 points from Opening Weekend

The Boulder Jr. Bison began their 3rd season on Friday night as they opened up at Cheyenne, which will surely become the I25 rivals.  The Stampede came out flying in front of a decent crowd and opened up the scoring early in the first period.  They added a power play goal shortly after putting the Bison back on their heels.  But the Bison battled back cutting the lead to 1 before the period ended.

The Jr. Bison power play would have something to say in the 2nd, however, scoring 4 unanswered goals taking a 5-2 lead heading into the 3rd and final period.  The Stampede came out flying again for the 3rd and tried mounting a comeback but came up short falling 5-3 to the Bison.

Scoring for the Bison were Will Neff (2), Jake Bauer (2) and Patrick Grace (1).  Preston James and Chris Guidotti each adding 3 helpers in the win and goaltender Chris Komma earning his first Junior win with 29 saves.

Saturday night the Bison came out flying with Ryan Gauthier scoring one of his 2 goals early on the potent PP.  This game however showed its young flaws as the Stampede scored on several Bison errors taking a 3-1 lead.  The Bison would show charachter mounting a come back to force overtime on goals by Chandler Yoder and Seth Ensor.

In overtime both teams exchanged chances but the Cheyenne Stampede landed the final blow ending the game on a Jr. Bison turnover with 40 seconds remaining in over time.  Head Coach Brent Cullaton said after that " Cheyenne deserved the win they took it to us and competed harder than we did.  I know their coaching staff and ownership over there and they will not settle for mediocricy,  in my opinion as tough as it is to say the better team won tonight, bottom line."

The Jr. Bison will have the next 5 days to prepare for the next home series Friday night as the new Park City Moose come to town.  Game times are Friday-7:15pm, Saturday- 7:15pm and Sunday- 12:00pm at BVICE.

Former NHLer Derek Armstrong added to Jr. Bison coaching staff

The Boulder Jr. Bison are pleased to announce that Derek Armstrong has been added to the team coaching staff and will assist in the development of players through his knowledge and experiences in the game.  "Army is a true ambassador to the game of hockey, he is passionate and will give everything he has to develop and teach these kids what it takes to make it".  Head Coach Brent Cullaton  recently had the opportunity to play in New Zealand with Derek on Team Canada. " I have played against him and he was our Captain on Canada, he is a leader and a very competitive guy, but with that being said he still goes out of his way to take care of his team which I was very impressed by. That's the kind of guy I want to surround myself and my players with.  I am extremely happy to have him help out in any capacity."  Derek will be starting with the team Tuesday September 6th, 2:00pm at practice.  The Junior Bison home openening game is Saturday September 24th at 7:15pm vs the Cheyenne Stampede at BVICE.

Throughout the majority of his career, Armstrong spent his NHL career with the Los Angeles Kings. He was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 6th round, 128th overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. Armstrong finally played his first full NHL season in the 2002–03 season, after eight years in the two same leagues. Most of his non-NHL stints were after rotating lineup positions between the teams' American Hockey League affiliates.
Due to the NHL lockout, as most NHL players did, Armstrong went to Europe, to play hockey in the Switzerland league National League A, playing for SC Rapperswil-Jona, totaling 17 points in only 12 games. Statistically, his best season was the 2006–07 campaign when he had 44 points as seventh place in Kings' points that year.
Armstrong signed with the St. Louis Blues on September 8, 2009.

Jr. Bison Tryouts Complete - Thanks to all players!

We had a great tryout boys, thanks to all for the effort.

Former Jr. Bison players to attend Pro hockey free agent camp

Former Boulder Junior Bison players A.J Tesoriero and Dustin Simmons will be joining their former team mate and Professional player Derek Scanlon at the Federal Hockey League (Single A) Professional tryout camp in Boston, MA this weekend.

Tesoriero who led the Jr. Bison in scoring in its inaugural season and was a major factor in the success of the team during its run to Nationals is ready for this opportunity.  "I have been training hard and feel that I am ready to compete and make this step to begin the next chapter in my hockey life" stated Tesoriero.

Simmons who captained the Jr. Bison this past season is also excited and ready for this opportunity. " I feel really good, I have been working hard and I am ready to perform at the pro level and earn a spot on a team.  I have had a tremendous amount of support from family and my Coach and especially my team manager Ed Smith, I am ready to go".

As for an already seasoned Derek Scanlon he knows all too well the level of commitment needed to break into the pro hockey world.  " Going into a camp like this, it is imperative that your conditioning be at its best.  I have been working extremely hard with my trainer Andrew Zimmerman and feel I am ready to go back for my second season and hopefully get an opportunity to move up and get my foot in the door at the next level.  Scanlon who signed with the Laredo Bucks of the CHL (AA level) last season was sent down to gain invaluable pro experience.  He went down and had a great first season over came some league adversity and ended up in Cape Cod in the FHL.   Assistant Coach Dan Hodge said Scanny came in as an unknown and really stepped it up, in the short time he was here he showed us his speed and ability to produce and we are excited to see what he can do this season for us.

The entire Boulder hockey community wishes these guys the best of luck in their future hockey endeavors.

Coach Cullaton to play with Team Canada in New Zealand

Jr. Bison Head Coach Brent Cullaton will be participating with his home country Team Canada as they take on Team USA in an ice hockey tour of New Zealand starting in Auckland, NZ on July 23rd at Vector Arena.  The tour, which will raise hockey awareness and promote the game throughout the country, will last two weeks and will travel to three different cities playing in New Zealand's biggest venues.  Auckland Vector Arena is the first stop in a three-game series, with the other games being played at Christchurch CBS Arena on July 30th and Dunedin Ice Stadium on August 3rd.

"They're throwing everything at this one,” stated New Zealand event director Gareth Webber.  “Sound and lighting effects, pyrotechnics and flamethrowers are just the beginning. You'll witness all the action and aggression live on the big screen, with slow motion replays getting up close and personal"

Cullaton was contacted by Kerry Goulet, the Team Canada director, after skating with Avalanche defenseman Kyle Quincey and former LA Kings forward Derek Armstrong, who both felt he could be a solid addition to the team.  "I am extremely proud to be asked to play for my home country in this event.  There are a lot of great players who I also feel deserve this opportunity and I am pleased to be selected,” stated Cullaton.  “Now I get to put to work what I have been teaching my players the past two seasons.  I am representing them and Canada.”

Event Director Gareth Webber is excited to have this game come to New Zealand and excited for the interest it has garnered so far.  He said, "New Zealand is excited about this event, with all the news networks and journalists covering it. You can expect the players to be greeted at the Auckland airport by a number of journalists keen to talk about the upcoming weeks".

As for Brent Cullaton, he is excited to play for his country and discover new training techniques for his Boulder Junior Bison and Boulder Hockey Club.

Former Jr. Bison crowned USHL Champion

Former Jr. Bison defensman Joe Bueltel has finished his junior career with a bang as his Dubuque Fighting Saints were crowned USHL Clark Cup Champions on Saturday May 21st in front of 3,500 home fans beating Green Bay 3 games to 1 in the best of  5.  Bueltel a 20 year old from Longmont, CO played for the junior Bison in the WSHL during the 2009/10 season before being called up to the SIJHL.  Joe is a tough competitor stated head coach Brent Cullaton, " He always came to the rink with his hard hat and lunch pail.  He was a motivated kid and we are extremely proud of him to have accomplished this feat.  He has brought pride to the Junior Bison and to our league".  Bueltel finished the season with 27 games played 2 goals 1 assist and 119 pims.  Tabbed as the Teddy bear by his teammates Bueltel was one of the nicest guys at the rink  always helping or talking to players, but on the ice don't take liberties on his mates as he was one of the fiercest players in the USHL.  Bueltel is excited for the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead as he is courting a few NCAA division 1 programs but thanks his Junior Bison coaches for helping push him to achieve his goals.

Former Bison forward Shaffroth contributing to MSOE success on ice

Senior forward Michael Soik scored his 50th career goal and junior forward Kyle Smith netted his first two goals on the season as the No. 11 Raiders defeated Lake Forest 6-1 Saturday night in the first game of the MCHA quarterfinals at the Kern Center in Milwaukee. Junior goaltender Connor Toomey made 19 saves in the victory.

Freshman forward Steven Shaffroth started the scoring at the 5:25 mark of the first period. After the Foresters tied the game later that period, Smith found the back of the net in the second period to give MSOE the lead for good. Freshman forward Austin Grosvenor added to the Raider advantage with a goal just about three minutes later.

MSOE pulled away in the final period as junior Todd Krupa, Soik and Smith all logged goals. Senior defenseman Aaron Humphries and Shaffroth each had three asissts while Soik recorded two assists. The Raiders (20-5-1) host Lake Forest Sunday at 3 p.m. MSOE needs a win or tie to advance to the MCHA Harris Cup Four. If the Foresters win, a 20-minute mini-game would be played immediately after regulation to determine which team will move on.

Playoffs set to begin after Bison drop final series at El Paso

March 1st, 2011 | by AJ Barnett

The Bison rolled into El Paso, TX this past weekend with the fight for the regular season division title. Starting the weekend behind in the standings by one point, Boulder needed two wins to capture the title and home ice advantage throughout the 2011 Thorne Cup Playoffs.

Friday night turned out to be a close contest. After a Dustin Simmons goal in the first, and two goals for the Rhinos; period one would end with Boulder down 2-1. In the second, Daniel Turgeon got things tied just 24 seconds into the frame. That goal would be followed quickly by a tally for El Paso, where the third period would end with the Bison down 3-2. Early in the third, a Rhinos shorthanded goal would make the score 4-2 in favor El Paso, and despite a late goal by Ryan Gauthier, the Bison were not able to overcome the deficit and lost by a final score of 4-3.

Due to the Friday night loss, Boulder went into Saturday knowing that for their first place title, they would need wins in their final two games of the season. The second game of the series started with the first period ending 1-0 in favor of El Paso. The second period of play consisted of numerous penalties from both teams, without either team able to capitalize on the powerplay opportunities. Max Meints was able to find the net about halfway through the period, tying the game into the final period. Late in the period, it would be Meints again, scoring the game winning goal with less than five minutes to play. With a 2-1 win, everything came down to the last game.

El Paso would get Sunday’s scoring started, and the first period would once again end 1-0 in favor of the Rhinos. Two second period goals would put El Paso on top 3-0, before Dan Sheehan was able to put the first goal on the board for Boulder late in the period. After nearly 20 minutes of scoreless play, Jeremy Rolfe brought the game within one goal with 4:33 on the clock. After pulling goaltender Mathieu LaBerge, the Bison looked to get the equalizer with the 6-on-5 advantage. Tyler Benson would be the El Paso player to put a damper on that, as he scored the empty net goal from the Rhinos end for a final score of 4-2.

The Boulder Bison finished the 2010-2011 Regular Season with a record of 31-12-3 for 65 points and 2nd place in the WSHL Mid-Western Division. The 2011 Thorne Cup Playoffs kick off this weekend March 4th at Boulder Valley Ice. The first game of the series against the 3rd seed Texas Brahmas will be played Friday night at 7:00pm. Game Two will be played Saturday night at 8:30pm, and if necessary, Game Three will be played Sunday night at 7:00pm.

The Mid-Western Division Championship series will be played March 11th-13th, and will be hosted by the highest remaining seed. The 2011 Thorne Cup Championship series will take place the following weekend, March 18th-20th, and will be hosted by the Mid-Western Division Champion.

Your 2010 - 2011 Boulder Jr. Bison

THE HOME STREAK STAYS ALIVE

February 7th, 2011 | by AJ Barnett

After the two week break, the Boulder Bison returned to action with their last home series of the regular season against the New Mexico Renegades. With the exception of a second period lapse in concentration Friday night, the Bison dominated the weekend outscoring New Mexico 20-7, and a cumulative shots advantage of 189-82.

Friday’s game opened up with a quick Bison power play, in which Matt Anders put the puck into the net with the help of Daniel Turgeon and new Bison defense man Jake Ryan. Only 50 seconds later, Andrew Hefter would add a second Bison goal, once again with the help of Turgeon, with Jeremy Rolfe also adding an assist on the play. After a first period that ended 2-0 in favor of Boulder, the team flattened out in the second period of play. David Higgs looked to get his team their jump back dropping the gloves for a long fight against New Mexico fighter Cole Fletcher. In the third, Max Meints would step up with assists from Taylor Porrier and Andrew Hefter to extend the lead back to two. After three unsuccessful Bison power plays, Anthony Cullen  would become the second Bison player to fight in the evening, followed shortly by a Dante Ruscitti goal and a 4-1 final score.

Boulder’s domination over New Mexico was displayed very well during Saturday’s contest. After a scoreless first period and going down 1-0 with 13:00 to play in the first, two goals from Dustin Simmons and Gabe Whiteman-Jones as well as goals from Matt Reed, Tim Brey, and Dylan Meier accounted for seven unanswered Bison goals in just over half a period. A goal by Ryan Gauthier in the third would make the score 8-1. After two consecutive fights involving Jeremy Rolfe and Jake Ryan, as well as a late New Mexico goal, the Bison would knock off another game against the Renegades, 8-2.

Sunday marked the final home game of the 2010-2011 regular season for the Bison. For the first period of play, both teams looked to be working equally as hard. With goals by Daniel Tugeon and Matt Reed, as well as two goals from Craig Perry, the first period would end knotted up at 2-2. Despite 32 shots in the second period for the Bison, only three would find the net. First it would be Max Meints, from Jamison Wicks and Jake Ryan. Shortly after, Gabe Whiteman-Jones would score his 5th goal in junior hockey, with assistance from line mates Matt Reed and Dante Ruscitti. In the final minute of play, Matt Anders would help Daniel Turgeon earn his second goal of the game, sending both teams to the intermission with a 5-3 Bison lead. Jamison Wicks would tally two goals in the third period, as well as a hat trick goal from Daniel Tugeon, final score 8-4 Boulder.

The Bison would like to thank everyone who came out for our final home weekend of the season. We would also like to thank Jordan Wicks for his performance of the national anthem before Saturday night’s game. The first round of the 2011 WSHL Playoffs will be March 4th-6th, 2011 against either the Tulsa Rampage or the Texas Brahmas. Currently your Bison are in first place in the Mid-West Division with a 2 point lead over the El Paso Rhinos. Over the next three weeks they will be fighting for the regular season division champions as well as home ice advantage throughout the 2011 Playoffs.

Boulder Bison Youth Leaders Honored at Junior Bison Opening Ceremony

Many of the Captains of our Boulder Hockey Clubs youth teams were
honored on the ice during the opening ceremony for the February 4th game against New Mexico. They all lined up in front of the Juniors and sang along to the National Anthem as they looked on to the Air Force ROTC Honor Guard from CU Boulder.

CULLATON FINDS BALANCE GALORE IN SECOND SEASON WITH BISON

January 13, 2011

By Tom Robinson
Special to USAHockey.com

Brent Cullaton isn’t the first coach to say something like “any of three lines could be No. 1 any day.”

Few, however, have the numbers to back up that statement the way Cullaton, the coach and general manager of the Boulder Bison, does.

After opening the New Year with a three-game sweep of the Tulsa Rampage, the Bison are leading the Western States Hockey League’s Midwest Division behind one of the nation’s most balanced offenses.

Boulder BisonsBoulder is 22-7-0-2 despite not having any scorers among the top nine in the league. Instead, the Bison have seven players averaging at least a point per game and two more just shy of that number. Only one comes close to approaching 1.5 points per game.

Ryan Gauthier leads the team with 33 points, including a team-high 22 assists, in 23 games. Team captain Dustin Simmons has 16 goals and 16 assists to trail Gauthier by just one point. Seven other teammates have at least 25 points.

“Our team has great depth,” Simmons said. “Everyone puts in an effort to do whatever he can.”

Daniel Turgeon, the team’s third-leading scorer, led the latest sweep, which gave the team a four-game winning streak.

Turgeon had two goals while Jamison Wicks had a goal and an assist on Jan. 7 in a 5-4 victory to return from the holiday break.

“We took two weeks off,” Cullaton said. “I think the time off made them want to play hockey again.”

Matt Anders had two goals and an assist while Turgeon had a goal and four assists in a 7-2 romp in the second game back.

Turgeon scored again to give him four goals and four assists in the series and his teammates piled up goals to complete the sweep with a 9-2 romp. Taylor Porrier and Simmons had two goals each while Gauthier added a goal and two assists.

The franchise is in just its second season but the Bison are trying to add to what is already a successful story.

Cullaton and assistant Jeff Neitenbach each started their coaching careers together as their playing days came to an end. They led the first-year team to a 40-18-2 record, division title and trip to USA Hockey Junior A Nationals.

Cullaton, an MVP in two different American minor leagues, was skating at a Colorado rink, trying to stay in shape in case he was able to extend a 15-year professional career that included time in the minors and a season in the German Elite League. He was offered a chance to coach the new team and took a path he had never planned.

“I didn’t really want to coach when I was a player just because it was so hard as a player,” he said, “but now as a coach you get to see what it’s like and I wish I was a coach before I played.

“Now, I understand it all better.”

In just two seasons, he has managed to build a relentless team that beats opponents with its depth.

“We just keep telling them, ‘Keep it simple, hockey’s a simple game,’” Neitenbach said. “The simple play can beat a lot of better teams.

“When you watch the NHL, they don’t try to get past six guys to two guys twice. Just chip it to your buddy in the corner and work hard.”

The Bison have learned to rely on each other.

“Everyone always has a chance to play,” Cullaton said. “We try to balance out the scoring with a lot of grinding.

“Any of three lines could be number one any day and our No. 4 line knows their role and does a pretty good job at it.”

Wicks and Dylan Meier, who has a team-high 20 goals, are tied with Turgeon for third on the team with 29 points. Chris Guidotti adds 28, Anders 27, Jeremy Rolfe 26 and Tim Brey 25.

BLOOD BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE

 January 17th, 2011

This past weekend, the Boulder Bison played host to their division rival, the El Paso Rhinos, in a blood battle that could end up deciding home ice advantage in the 2011 Mid-West Division Playoffs. It’s a rivalry that brewed last year when the Bison defeated the Rhinos for the 2010 Mid-West Division Championship in their inaugural season. Coming into the weekend, the Bison were at the top of the Mid-West Standing, with a 22-7-2 record, while the Rhinos held a record of 16-7-2. While this put the Rhinos two spots below Boulder in the standings, they had played 6 less games with the Bison, making their potential records equal.

The Rhinos, egger to start things off in their favor, came out Friday night with explosive power that Boulder could not match. Bison goaltender Mathieu LaBerge would end up facing 12 more shots than Trent Caspar on the other end of the ice, and a rough first period for Boulder would put them at a 3-0 deficit following first period action. In the second, Yari Neitenbach would drop the gloves after a scrum in front of the net, taking down Matt Tritsch less than ten seconds into the fight. That would be the first of two fights in the game, with Preston James going after Carter Achilles at the end of the second period. LaBerge and Caspar would also exchange words, resulting in an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty to the Bison goalie. With the Daniel Turgeon goal that came late in the period, the score after two would be 4-0 El Paso. The third period would see two more Rhinos goals, ending the Bison win streak with a 6-1 loss.

Saturday was a much different story for the Boulder squad. Feeding off of the frustrating loss the night before, the team came in flying during the first. Andrew Hefter would put on the first tally of the game with help from Taylor Porrier and Dustin Simmons (C), while El Paso would strike not to long later. The first period would end tied at 1 goal a side. Jamison Wicks would come out during the second and add the go-ahead tally, which started 13:00 of back and forth hockey. El Paso would score less than two minutes later, followed by a goal from Jeremy Rolfe to take the lead back with 5:42 to play in the period. 90 seconds later, El Paso would strike back and tie it up, before scoring late to take a 4-3 lead into the locker room. The third period was the best Bison comeback of the 2010-2011 season. A very early Daniel Turgeon goal that came on the power play would tie things up, followed up by goals from Yari Neitenbach and Jamison Wicks for a 6-4 Bison lead. A late goal for El Paso looked to give the squad hope, as they spent 7 minutes down only one goal, but Yari Neitenbach would put the empty net seal on the Bison victory, scoring with only .09 seconds left on the clock. Bison win 7-5.

Sunday looked like it was going to be though toughest battle yet, as we sat scoreless for the first 19:25 of the game. Things looked as if they would take a turn in El Paso’s favor when Jamison Wicks took a tripping call with a minute to play in the first, but it would be Ryan Gauthier with help from Anthony Cullen on the shorthanded attempt who would score with only 35 seconds to play in the first. With that, the Bison took momentum into the locker room leading the game 1-0. That’s exactly how the second period was played. Under seven minutes in, new addition to the Bison roster, Gabe Whiteman-Jones, would score his first goal as a member of the Boulder Bison, making the lead 2-0. Two minutes later, Taylor Porrier added a goal of his own, making the score 3-0 Bison. Dante Ruscitti found the score sheets another two minutes later, give Boulder the 4-0 lead. It looked as if that’s how the period would end, but El Paso scored a late goal, cutting the Bison lead to 4-1 after two periods. In the third, the Bison came out with as much, if not more jump as they did at the beginning of the second. 2:07 into the period, Gabe Whiteman-Jones would score his second goal, and Boulder would go up 5-1. The rest of the games was expected El Paso vs. Boulder hockey. Things took a turn for the worst, and the game got chippy. With just over ten minutes left in the game, Dustin Simmons (C) took a hard cross check in the back, strait into the wall behind the Bison net. Tyler Beasley was assessed a 5 minute major for boarding, and Simmons was given a 5 minute major for cross-checking. After it was all said and done, the Bison had defeated El Paso two days in a row, this time by a score of 5-1. These two rivals will face each other three more times, in El Paso, TX during Boulder’s last series of the 2010-2011 regular season.

RENEGADES DELIEVER UNEXPECTED BLOW

The Bison played host to the New Mexico Renegades this past weekend. The Renegades came into Colorado on a low; last place in the Mid-Western Division, while also on a long winning streak. The Bison just had their long 11 game winning streak broken by Texas the weekend before, after splitting 4-points each. The weekend looked to be a relatively easy 6 points for Boulder, as was clearly shown in Friday nights contest.

The game was played pretty clean on both sides, no fights and only 8 combined penalties in the game. The scoreboard, however, would not remain so blank. Daniel Turgeon put up a tally for Boulder 2:39 into the game, and the Bison didn’t look back. Four more goals in the first period, off the sticks of Dustin Simmons, Jeremy Rolfe, Jordan Heffner, and another goal by Daniel Turgeon, to give the Bison a 5-0 lead. In the second and third periods; Anthony Cullen would find the net twice, while Dante Ruscitti, Chris Guidotti, and David Higgs would all find the twine for their own goals. The result, Boulder wins 10-0 (setting the record for the biggest WSHL win of the 2010-11 season). Bison goaltender Michael Porter would also earn his first shutout of the year, stopping all 12 New Mexico shots. “I felt good about having my first shutout. It was good to finally get that off my back. Staying alert is tough, I just try to keep talking to myself and do some skating to stay warm and alert.” said Porter when asked about the shutout, and how to stay focused when taking very little shots in the game.

Saturday’s game was a much different story for the Bison, as for New Mexico. It took nearly 20 minutes of play, but in the last minute of the first period, William Manchester made the game 1-0 in favor of the Renegades. The period would end, unexpectedly, with Boulder down a goal. In the second period, the Bison came out with a bit of the fire they had in the night before, scoring four unanswered goals from Matt Anders, Daniel Sheehan, Max Meints, and Jeremy Rolfe. The Renegades went to work on the powerplay late in the period, scoring two goals off the stick of Brian Fiol. Anthony Cullen of the Bison was able to extend the lead to 5-3 before the second intermission. Brian Fiol would continue his scoring late in the third period, scoring two more powerplay goals to send the game into sudden death overtime. After being unsuccessful on the remaining minute and a half on the Jordan Heffner major penalty, the Trevor McClary would score to give the Renegades the 6-5 win, their first win in 17 games.
Sunday’s early afternoon game was more Bison hockey. Andy Borunda would be starting his first game in net for the Bison. The Bison wasted no time in getting this one started, as Anthony Cullen scored just under two minutes into the game. Chris Guidotti would add a goal of his own at the halfway point to make the game 2-0 Bison. In the second, Dan Sheehan would make the game 3-0 in favor of the Bison with 7:17 to play, followed by a fight between Bison player Max Meints and New Mexicos leading scorer, Brian Fiol. The third period would start off with Jeremy Rolfe and Garret Phillips dropping the gloves. Rolfe would also receive an extra two minutes for roughing during the fight. Just over the halfway point, Dylan Meier would score for the 4-0 Bison lead. After 60 minutes of hockey, that’s where the score would stay. Andy Borunda is now the second Bison goaltender to earn a shutout this season, stopping all 15 Renegades shots for a perfect 1.000 save percentage, and a 0 goals against average.

We would like to congratulate former Bison players Ryan Gauthier and Chance Creger for their recent call ups to the Corpus Christi IceRays of the NAHL. Gauthier had his first NAHL goal last weekend against the Texas Tornados, contributing to a 3-2 OT win. After the departure of Ryan Gauthier, Chris Guidotti is now tied for the points lead on the Bison roster. After the weekend, I was able to talk to Chris about how he thinks his role has changed now that Gauthier and Creger aren’t in the locker room anymore. “One of the great things about our team is everyone is capable of stepping up and being a leader, and anyone can be a go to player on any given night. We are a family and we support each other. That’s what Bison hockey is all about.”

The Bison have a long road schedule ahead of them. Next weekend they will visit Tulsa, OK for a three game series against the Tulsa Rampage, followed by a four game league showcase in Las Vegas, NV. All seven road games will be available to view on FastHockey.com

Jr. BISON FIGHT IN DALLAS

The Bison rolled out of Superior at midnight Thursday night, in route for the NyTex Center just outside of Dallas, TX. Their opponent, the Texas Junior Brahmas. This was possibly the most important weekend of the Boulder Bison season to date. This weekend marks the first of a two weekend home-and-home with Texas.

The Texas Brahmas came into this weekend 10-6-0-1 with 21 points and 2nd place in the Mid-Western Division, while the Boulder Bison sat at 9-3 for 18 points and 4th place, as well as a six game win streak; prior to contests with the Brahmas. Texas, who dropped two of three to Tulsa last weekend was looking to come out and make up some lost ground, while Boulder was looking to keep the freight train moving at full speed.

Just as it was last week in New Mexico, Friday night was the most eventful and competitive game of the weekend. Under halfway through the period Tim Brey would score off of a pass from Ryan Gauthier for the 1-0 Bison lead. Six minutes later, Dylan Meier would get it done on the power play, also off a pass from Ryan Gauther, to make it 2-0 Bison going into the locker room. In the second period in would be Ryan Gauthier getting on the box score again, this time after taking a slashing penalty with 14:24 to play. Despite the Texas power play, it would be the Bison who capitalized first, as Matt Anders would score to make the game 3-0 Boulder. Nick O’Donnell would find the net during that power play, cutting the Bison lead to 3-1. During another power play opportunity for Texas, Kevin Filthaut would sink the puck into the netting, cutting the Bison lead even further, now 3-2. Dustin SimmonsChris Guidotti, and Andrew Hefter were able to move the puck to each other on the power play late in the period, sending the Bison into the locker room up 4-2. The third period of action had Dylan Meier finding the net for the second time on the night, as well as a goal from Ben Hull. Both goals were assisted by Ryan Gauthier, giving him 4 assists in the game, and a 6-2 Bison lead. Jordan Gnatowsky would find himself a late goal for the Brahmas, but it would not effect the outcome, Bison win 6-3.

The second game of the weekend looked to be a closer contest, at least for the first period of play. Bison forward Nick Sutton was determined to give his team some jump early on, dropping the gloves with Texas player Cole Fletcher 1:31 into the game. “He (Sutton) walked away bleeding, so I’m not sure who won.” said Bison equipment manager Carl Poole. When asked about what he thought of the fights outcome, Sutton commented, “It was pretty even.”, and left it at that. The first period would end scoreless, with the Bison killing off their first two penalties of the evening. In the second period, things would open up for Boulder. Just under five minutes into the period, Dylan Meier would open up the scoring, making it 1-0 Bison. Chris Guidotti would tack on the first assist, while the second assist would go to Nick Sutton, his first point of the 2010-2011 season. Not much later, Jamison Wicks would put the puck in the net, also off the pass from Chris Guidotti, this time the second assist from Dylan Meier for his second point of the night. Anthony Cullen would score later on, as well as a second goal from Jamison Wicks, making the score 4-0 Boulder. Jordan Heffner and Matt Reed would share assists on the Cullen goal, while Ryan Gauthier would be the lone assist on the second Wicks goal. Second period ends with a score 4-0 Bison. In the third, Kevin O’Donnell and company looked to make an early statement, scoring a Texas goal only 40 seconds into the period. But it wouldn’t last, as Tim Brey would have the only other goal in the period, with assists from Ryan Gauthier and Daniel Turgeon. 5-1 Bison victory.

The last game of the weekend would also start with a fight. This time, Boulder player Yari Neitenbach would drop the gloves with Cole Fletcher from Texas only 1:05 into the game. The fight had huge effect on the Bison bench, as 1:32 later, Chris Guidotti would put Boulder up 1-0 in the game. Matt AndersAndrew Hefter, and Nick Sutton would also successfully find the net together for the 2-0 lead. With 3:28 to play, Andrew Hefter would get a goal of his own with the help of Daniel Turgeon and Ryan Gauthier, 3-0 Bison. Ten seconds later, Kevin O’Donnell would make an attempt to slow the Bison offence, scoring the goal to make the game 3-1. His attempt would be unsuccessful, however, as Dustin Simmons would sing a power play goal with 22 seconds to play, 4-1 Bison at the break. After the Anders goal, we would also see David Higgs and Curtis Kort drop the gloves for the third fight of the weekend, undoubtedly giving the Bison the needed push for their next two goals. The second period was all Bison hockey. Jeremy Rolfe would get the scoring started, with help from Andrew Hefter with 17:23 to play. David Higgs would find the puck from Dylan Meier for the 6-1 lead, Chris Guidotti would also pick up an assist on the play. Tim Brey would also continue his streak, making the score 7-1 Bison, with the assists coming from Daniel Turgeon and Ryan Gauthier. After a late power play goal for Texas, the periods score would end 7-2 Bison. Jeremy Rolfe would add his second goal to the scoresheet off the Jordan Heffner pass with just over three minutes to play, making the final score 8-2 Bison.

After this weekends games, the Boulder Bison are now on a 9 game winning streak, having swept their last three series’. The wins put the Bison in first place in the Mid-Western Division. Should the El Paso Rhinos win their contest this evening, Boulder will come back into town in 2nd place in the Mid-West. Next weekend, the Bison face off against the Texas Brahmas at home, as they make the trip up to Superior for the second series of the home-and-home. Looking forward, head coach Brent Cullaton had this to say, “We played solid all weekend. We capitalized on their mistakes. We need to keep up the intensity and work ethic to continue to win. Texas is well coached and they don’t quit.”.

All games next weekend will be played at the Boulder Valley Ice Center in Superior, CO. Friday and Saturday nights games will be played at 7:00pm, while Sunday’s game will be played at 11:00am. Tickets are just $5. Bison games are a great activity to bring the family out to as well. Celebrate the Thanksgiving weekend with some hockey!

Domination in New Mexico

Going into this weekends match up with New Mexico, the Boulder Bison boasted a record of 6-3, coming off a three game sweep of the Tulsa Rampage the weekend prior. Despite their success against Tulsa, the Bison knew that in order to create a name for themselves, they had to keep winning. Well, that’s exactly what they did going into New Mexico, as the Boulder Bison would achieve another sweep against the New Mexico Renegades, winning all three games from the Blades Multiplex Arena in Rio Rancho, NM.

Friday nights game was the most competitive of the three, as it may have been the only game New Mexico had the gas for. The Renegades would start off the scoring, with Craig Parry scoring 5:55 into the contest. Less than two minutes later, Dustin Simmons of the Bison would get it done short handed, making this game 1-1 going into the locker room. Ryan Gauthier didn’t waste any time getting things going in the second period, scoring a power play goal only 24 seconds in to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Bison. Not much later, the Renegades would capitalize on a 5 on 3 power play to make the game 2-2. Dustin Simmons would be the recipient of an interference call with 4:44 to play in the period, but it was Jeremy Rolfe who was able to make something of it, putting a short handed tally on the board to send the Bison into the locker room up 3-2. Just over two minutes into the third, New Mexico put the game tying tally on the board thanks to a Spencer Archer shot. As it came down to the wire, Ryan Gauthier would score again to carry the Bison to a 4-3 victory.

The Renegades were determined to start things off quickly Saturday night, and they would. Only 35 seconds into the game, it would be Craig Parry once again to score the first goal of the contest. After 19:25 of hockey, that’s how the first period would end, 1-0 New Mexico. Dustin Simmons would continue his point streak, making the game 1-1. Tim Brey came along 29 seconds later to give the Bison a 2-1 lead. It was at this point that New Mexico would lose coach Peter Ambroziak due to a game misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct. Then it would be Ryan Gauthier on the power play to extend the lead to two, followed up by Jeremy Rolfe to make the game 4-1. William Manchester would put a goal in the net to cut the Bison lead to 4-2 before the teams entered the locker room. Each team would put on three tallies in the third. Anthony CullenJamison Wicks, and Matt Anders would do the scoring for Boulder, while Trevor McClaryChris Thirion, and William Manchester would put the puck in the net for New Mexico. The result was a 7-5 victory for Boulder, extending their win streak to 5.

Tim Brey would open scoring in the third game of the weekend, scoring two goals 45 seconds apart. New Mexico scored late in the period thanks to Michael Kalaber to make the score 2-1 Boulder after one period of play. In the second, New Mexico would tie things up, with both Jonathan Voyles and Garrett Phillips contributing goals. Dustin Simmons was able to score a late power play goal, extending his point streak to 6 games, and tying the game up going into the third period. David Higgs got things started for Boulder in the period, scoring 1:39 in to give the Bison a 4-3 lead. With 11:43 to play, Tim Brey would burry the hat trick tally, giving Boulder the 5-3 lead. Nine seconds later, Anthony Cullen would connect with Matt Reed to make the score 6-3 Boulder. That’s where the score would stay, giving the Boulder Bison the third victory of the weekend, and extending their winning streak to 6.

The Boulder Bison are now 8-2 in their last ten games, with 18 points. That puts them 5 points behind the Mid-West Division leading Tulsa Rampage with 8 games in hand. The Bison will be back at the Boulder Valley Ice Center for practice Tuesday, and take another road trip next weekend, this time to play the Texas Jr. Brahmas. All three games, like all Boulder Junior Bison games, will be available to watch on FastHockey.com.
